LX Free works great for really quick and dirty plots. I use it often, because I can run up a plot in about 10 min. Blasphemous. However, it does have fairly severe limitations, and for final plots and plots for the electricians, I use vectorworks. Takes a bit longer for me, at least, but really excellent software. As far as making a stage plot goes, it doesn't need to be incredibly artistic. In fact, in most cases, the simpler the better. If your stage plot involves a full-color key and is best viewed on a 14'x18' piece of paper, you've probably gone too far. Basic knowledge in most word processing programs can yield you a very functional stage plot.
